Proud Placemaker: Fran Taylor, Downtown

Well hey there, Fran! Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us. So where in Birmingham do you call home?

I currently live in Downtown Birmingham. I’m at Park Place, which is Uptown near the new entertainment district!

How fun! That’s such a great place. Are you a native to the area?

I’m originally from Prichard, Al (Mobile County). I moved to Birmingham after graduate school at Auburn University. I’ve also
lived in Tallahassee, Fl for several years.

So why did you choose Birmingham?

I moved for work. I was lucky enough to find a job opportunity in Birmingham; which to me positively reflects on the upswing
of the job market here.

That’s such a great point! It’s exciting to see the economic growth happening in the area. What was it about the downtown that made it seem like an appealing place for you to live?

When I considered moving my first objective was low cost and reasonable quality. I also considered distance from work and safety. Ultimately, I found that Park Place was a good value and great starting off point for a young professional. I am in close proximity to major downtown attractions, so much so that on most weekends I can visit the park, the art museum, the public library and other cultural outlets without having to drive. Living ‘Uptown Birmingham’ has a cosmopolitan appeal that I enjoy.

It is a great, convenient location! People forget just how many amazing amenities lie within downtown dwelling. So what is it that makes you such a Proud Placemaker?

I enjoy Birmingham City living because I have access to cultural and historic attractions. I feel like I’m in the center of regional information exchange, and there are several new developments that I get to experience. I like walking to attractions like Railroad Park, Regions Field, the entertainment district, etc. I’m not far from Southside, Avondale, and Homewood, in case I want a change of scenery. I find that there’s always a new niche to explore. I also love parks and open spaces, I think they are places that inspire community engagement that help showcase local assets.

Those are all truly the benefits of city-center living! And what would you tell people considering a move to the city?

My neighborhood has both fast-paced elements and easy going elements. I would tell a new-comer that living downtown gives them the authentic southern big city living experience. Birmingham is undergoing several new projects that will increasingly make the city more convenient, attractive, and inviting; who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?!

We’re definitely excited to be a part of that and we love that you are too!
