Proud Placemaker: Joyce Spielberger and Maury Shevin, Forest Park

Hey you two! Well let’s get started- why don’t you tell us a little about yourselves and the neighborhood you love to call your home?

We are Joyce Spielberger and Maury Shevin, very proud residents of Forest Park.  Maury is a native and Joyce is an Atlanta
transplant, though having lived in the Birmingham area for many years.  We both have made aliyah (We won't tell you what it
means, but you can Google™ it!) from over-the-mountain in recent years, wanting a more urban lifestyle where we can walk
and bike to work and play.

Very cool! So what was it about Forest Park that made it seem like the right fit for you two?

We were attracted to the beauty, age and history of the Forest Park neighborhood.  Like several other residential areas of our City, Forest Park has a great history, and sense of itself. We have spent considerable time uncovering the history of our 90 year old home, researching the Birmingham library archives, corresponding with previous owners and talking with long time Forest Park residents. As a result our home now is listed on the Jefferson County Historical Commission Registry along with many homes in this area. Our neighbors take pride in their homes and yards, our parks and sidewalks.

That’s amazing! We love when citizens put such an inspiring amount of work into their homes. With that being said, what would you say is your favorite thing about your Birmingham home?

While we celebrate a most walkable and runnable part of Birmingham, we are most proud of our front porch living—where we can sit and visit with family and friends over a glass of wine, while we wave to our more ambitious neighbors as they walk, run and bike by! We are a neighborhood of people who just like to visit and connect with one another.

Forest Park is filled with such charm and really gives such a friendly vibe to anyone passing through! It seems like you two have gotten a great feel for that. Any last words you would like to leave with someone considering moving to the neighborhood?

Forest Park and South Avondale are all about inclusion and diversity—celebrating our differences, not running away from them.  We have residents from every walk of life, and every color and persuasion.  We love it here because we are two threads that help form a beautiful tapestry. Come visit!

Beautifully stated, you two! With all your talk of relaxing front porch living, you make Forest Park sound too tempting to resist checking out. Thanks for sharing!

Maury is an attorney with the Southside law firm Sirote & Permutt.  Joyce is the Executive Director of Magic Moments, the only wish granting organization dedicated to serving children in Alabama with life threatening issues. With offices just two miles away from their home, they love meeting up with friends after work or just being alone together in the “exciting and eclectic area of Birmingham.”
