Proud Placemaker, Andrew Vines, Glen Iris

Hi, Andrew! Tell us what neighborhood you call home.

I live in the Glen Iris neighborhood in Southside. I am a native of the Birmingham area having grown up in Hoover, but I’ve lived in Birmingham proper for over 4 years.

We're interested in what keeps you busy here in the Magic City. What's your day job?

I am a recent accounting graduate from UAB. Right now I’m studying for my Masters in Accounting and studying for the CPA exam. I’ll be starting work in the fall working for Ernst & Young in Birmingham.

Woohoo! We get excited when young professionals make the choice to start their career here in Birmingham. Congrats on your new position! Care to share what compelled you to stay in Birmingham after college?

I started UAB in the fall of 2009 and was relative newcomer to the downtown scene. I grew up only 20 minutes away in Hoover, but rarely ventured outside the suburban communities other than to attend UAB basketball and football games. However, I made the decision to live on campus as a student at UAB and loved living in Southside. I remained in the campus residence halls for three years, lived at Crowne on 10th apartments last year, and just recently bought a house in the Glen Iris neighborhood! I like the historic feel of the area while also being right by all the new energy in downtown and Southside. I can walk to UAB, George Ward Park, and Giuseppe’s (great neighborhood pizza place).

Glen Iris is such a beautiful historic neighborhood, and so conveninent! Now that you're getting settled in, share with us what city living looks like for you.

There are so many benefits to living in Birmingham. The city is really on the rise and you can feel all the new energy downtown. I’m just a short drive away from great restaurants and nightlife in 5 points/Lakeview, the Railroad Park area with the new Baron’s stadium, and all of the top concert venues such as Workplay, Iron City, Bottletree, the Alabama Theater, and the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center. Not to mention being close to the city’s cultural attractions like Vulcan, the McWane Center, and the Birmingham Art Musuem (which has a lot of cool events). To sum it up, there’s just always something fun going on in Birmingham. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else as a young professional.

We can tell you stay busy! What would be your advice to other college graduates or young professionals who are considering a job in Birmingam?

I would say that they should first consider Birmingham. There are so many diverse neighborhoods and types of housing available. My own neighborhood has well kept historic houses that are affordable and are in a great location with the proximity to all the activities I mentioned earlier.

Andrew certainly is a Proud Placemaker, and in addition to seeing him out and about at all the places mentioned, you can most likely see him cheering on the UAB Blazers. You an also follow Andrew on Twitter.
