Proud Placemaker: Robin Hood, Bush Hills

Hey Robin! What neighborhood do you currently hale from?

I live in the Bush Hills community

And you’re not from the South, right?

No, I am not a native of Birmingham. I am originally from Long Beach, California.

California?! We’d love to hear how you came to call the Magic City your home…

I ended up in Birmingham by way of family. My mother, who was originally from Birmingham, decided to move back after 32 years of California living. I was still in my last two years of high school at the time and was not going to move with her because I thought she was moving to a place where people drove on dirt roads and wore overalls. So I actually stayed in California with my oldest sister so I could finish school. However, after several convincing phone calls from my mom on how up-to-date Birmingham was, I decided to come and finish my last two years in Birmingham. I never looked back.

We are glad you made the move, and we can imagine the West coast is quite different from our neck of the woods. Tell us, what are some of the benefits that you’ve found living in Birmingham?

It’s Big City living with a small town feel, which is great for networking. And then there’s the ‘melting pot’ of people. Birmingham is becoming so diverse. I love the mix of different cultures which brings new ideas and new ‘restaurants’. I love trying cultural cuisines.

So, if you were going to try and attract others to the city… say, other Californians… what would want them to know about your new home?

That Birmingham is a great place to live. If you’re looking for a nice place to raise a family with a mix of city and country living, Birmingham is the place. Also, that it’s a great place for traveling. Alabama is pretty much central to all the southern states, so you can easily travel and see other states in a weekend.

Also, Bush Hills is a quaint, well-kept Birmingham City neighborhood with homes that are rich in character. It’s convenient to Downtown, UAB and interstates. The community is working to attract more professionals and families.

Thanks for chatting with us, Robin! And, we'll see you (and your husband Anthonyaround the neighborhood...
