Proud Placemaker: Julie Ward, Crestline Park

Hey, Julie! Tell us what neighborhood you live in...

Crestline Park.

We know you're not a native. Where did you relocate from?

Virginia by way of Oxford, Mississippi.

Why did you move to Birmingham?

I moved to Birmingham for a PR internship a week after graduating with a Journalism degree from Ole Miss. My plan was to try out PR as a career path while also considering grad school and other options for entering the “real world.” As it turned out, I loved practicing PR and I loved living in Birmingham. I’ve been here for five years now and feel very at home.

We're so glad you stuck around. You certainly add to the charm of the Magic City! We curious about what things attracted you to your current home/apartment and neighborhood...

I live in a beautiful neighborhood with friendly neighbors.  It’s so uplifting to see kids walking to school together, people jogging with their dogs and friends getting together.  I feel very safe where I live and I also feel close to everything.  I can work, shop and play without having to be in a car for more than 10 minutes.

City living doesn't get much better than that! But we're all about waxing poetic about the many reasons this place is so special. If you'd be so kind, give us your list of top benefits of Birmingham City living...

1. Birmingham is filled with people who have big city dreams but have home in their heart. Because of this, we have world-class restaurants, gifted musician talented artists and a rich culture that continues to fuel pride in the city.
2. Birmingham is the most philanthropic, giving place I’ve ever lived. The social scene thrives on events that make a difference.
3. Our airport has several direct flights and the security lines are rarely long. Plus, you can now enjoy a Good People beer while you wait for your flight!
4. We’re only a few short hours away from Nashville, Atlanta and Jackson, which means out-of-town weekends and day trips are a breeze. We’re also close to the mountains and the beach.
5. Young professionals in Birmingham are very active and very proud of their city, providing a great environment for networking and professional development.
6. It’s a really special time in Birmingham. A time that people are excited about making this city as great as it can possibly be. The energy of new ideas and hope for a better Birmingham is inspiring.

What would you tell an outsider looking to move to this area? How would you sell your own neighborhood?

Living in Birmingham has all the perks of living in a city as well as the comforts of living in a small town. Wherever you go, you see people you know, but there are always new people to meet and new things to see and do.
