Proud Placemaker: Sherri Ross Walters, Forest Park

1. What neighborhood do you live in?

Forest Park/Avondale

2. Where did you relocate from?

Northern Virginia/DC Metro area

3. Why did you move to Birmingham?

Family, friends. I am originally from AL and grew up outside Montgomery. I lived in Birmingham prior to my moving to DC and knew this was the only place in AL I wanted to live when I decided to move back home.

4. What things attracted you to your current home/apartment and neighborhood?

The diversity and charm of the area. We have artists, teachers, lawyers, doctors, children, animals, homemakers, and people of many different ethnic backgrounds all living and loving in the same place. It’s wonderful to meet new neighbors, as well as learn more about them and their culture and share some of your own. We also have wonderful restaurants, parks, and shops that we can easily walk to on a beautiful Birmingham day.

5. In your opinion, what are the top benefits of Birmingham City living?

Friendly neighbors (Birmingham is the only city I’ve ever lived in where I knew my neighbors and they knew me), walking access to nearby top recognized restaurants, markets and hot spots like Avondale Brewery and 41st Street, lots of outdoor activities, a MILLION things to do downtown, in Southside, Forest Park, etc. any given weekend and many week days, and plenty of green space for furry friends.

6. What would you tell an outsider looking to move to this area? How would you sell your own neighborhood?

Our historic neighborhood has charm out the wazoo. I love the eclectic, FUN bunch of people that live in and around me. A wonderful feature of our neighborhood, besides the beautiful architecture and unique houses, is the understood “ Neighborhood Watch” in the area. We all look out for each other all the time and it just comes with the neighborhood and being a good neighbor. We take care of each other and help each other out at a moment's notice.

If you were looking to move here, I would tout the culture in our area including our many talented local theatre and comedy groups, as well as world-renowned music venues that bring top-name acts, cultural festivals, museums that carry the best exhibits, restaurants that have the best chefs, hundreds of ways to get involved and give back, history all over, mountains to hike, lakes to visit, plenty of parks with family-friendly activities nearly every weekend, along with plenty of hot spots for singles looking to mingle in Lakeview. Birmingham has it all - including the largest statue ever cast in the United States!
