Arlington-West End

Arlington-West End is a historic residential community situated west of downtown Birmingham. The neighborhood is home to the West End's largest employer, Princeton Baptist Medical Center, which also hosts a weekly farmers market.

Several initiatives are strengthening the area:

Urban Ministry, Inc. offers services and opportunities to the neighborhood, as well as the greater Birmingham area.

The West End Community Garden has become a community hub. It offers health & wellness classes, community gardening, produce for work share, and is host to the Collard Green Cook-Off. (Volunteer days are held every Wednesday and Saturday morning. The Garden is located on the corner of 12th Street SW & McMillon Ave.)

HISTORY

Arlington Antebellum House, was built during the 1840s by Judge William Mudd, one of the ten founders of Birmingham. The estate formerly commanded hundreds of acres, and still presides over a 6-acre lot at 331 Cotton Avenue Southwest. During the Civil War, General James H. Wilson, who conducted the largest Union raid into Alabama in the spring of 1865, established his headquarters at Arlington while planning his raid to destroy Confederate factories and munitions at Selma. It is now a historical interpretive museum and reception hall owned by the City of Birmingham, available to rent for private events.
